India
:
St. Mary's

In 1954, a group of Dominican nuns arrived to build a hospital in Ahmedabad, an industrial city of textile mills known as the "Manchester" of India. When the mills closed in the 1980's, many men lost their jobs and the women became the sole source of support for their families. The nuns organized a sewing/embroidery center where women use traditional skills, including the beautiful mirror work embroidery, to create works of art. All profits from sales are distributed to the artisans.
