Fundacion Solidaridad
The Fundacion Solidaridad (Solidarity Foundation) was established in the late 1970s by the Chilean Bishops to help market handcrafts and offer support to the families of some of the thousands of political prisoners arrested by the Chilean army during the military crackdown following the overthrow of Socialist President Allende. Although the Pinochet dictatorship is no longer in power, the economy is still struggling and women in the barrios still gather to support each other and to sew and applique textile products like arpilleras, dolls, and clerical stoles.
