Kumbeshwar Technical School
 |
|
Maya, Wool Spinner | In Nepal, a stratified caste-based Hindu society, social contact between people of different castes is the exception rather than the rule. The founder of Kumbeshwar Technical School, a butcher by trade, was concerned about the poverty and class discrimination he saw in his Kathmandu neighborhood. He had a different vision. When his bone fertilizer business became successful, he made a commitment to share the proceeds with his neighbors of the "untouchable" castes, street sweepers and rickshaw drivers. As a result, he built an orphanage, a free primary school, and a technical school used to train future carpet weavers, knitters, and carpenters. The products produced in the technical school, such as hand knit items, rugs, and furniture, are marketed and sold to sustain the school and to promote economic empowerment of the school graduates. Two new products for K.T.S. are organic tea and most recently silver jewelry.
