Dhaka Handicrafts
Dhaka Handicrafts, formerly Enfants du Monde (a Swiss non-governmental development organization), is a worker-owned organization marketing traditional handcrafts (baskets & terra cotta pottery) for rural artisans in Bangladesh. Dhaka offers a variety of benefits to its 1800 producers and their families; interest-free advances for the purchase of raw materials, a retirement savings plan, prompt payment for orders, donation of free saplings to help with reforestation, health care, and equal pay and benefits for women.
When cutting Kaisa grass from riverbanks for Dhaka's grass baskets, villagers are careful to leave the roots intact, thus insuring a crop for the year ahead.
