Tanganyika Christian Refugee Service
The Tanganyika Christian Refugee Service (TCRS) is a program of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) which sponsors development projects in northern Tanzania which aid Maasai tribesmen, victims of HIV/Aids, and Burundian refugees. The Republic of Tanzania has become a temporary home for thousands of refugees fleeing the political violence between the Tutsi and Hutu tribes in neighboring Burundi. At the four TCRS-run Kibondo Refugee camps in northwestern Tanzania operated in partnership with the UN refugee agency, over 132,000 refugees from Burundi receive food, shelter, and conflict resolution training, as well as training in technical skills and small business development. About 529 Burundian refugees earn income making baskets, which they use to supplement their meager food rations.
