| Akany Tsimoka artisan | We are proud to present Akany Tsimoka, one of our newest partners, who is taking on big challenges in their home country of Madagascar and responding in creative ways.
Facing some of the highest rates of malnutrition and poverty in the world, Akany Tsimoka is a non-profit organization that runs an orphanage and a center that is providing a variety of services to poor families in Antananarivo, Madagascar.
The center provides schooling, medical access and on-site pharmacy, and a savings and micro-credit program. It also has job training courses in agriculture, animal husbandry, computers and auto mechanics in addition to an income generation project for craftspeople that produces woven natural fiber products.
Our relationship with Akany Tsimoka began several years ago, when we were introduced to them through the Madagascar office of Catholic Relief Services. Akany Tsimoka had never before exported their products, but we were struck by their determination and desire, and decided to partner with them to make it happen. We have made several trips to Madagascar since, to work with the men and women weavers on finding reliable sources for materials, new weaving and dyeing techniques, inspirations for new product ideas, and the many aspects of exporting to the United States.
Akany Tsimoka’s hard work has paid off. We are proud to be carrying their first products to be offered in the U.S. and look forward to developing with them a larger line of natural fiber bags, baskets, and table linens.
